Africa

I watched "Quest" Sunday on CNN. The program was about Africa. Hunger, disease, and death, focusing on Live 8 program.
You know, scenes were really dramatic. A kid just said: "Last night we were three and today we are just two"...
And I was thinking to the facts around us. We are simply ignoring millions of people who live on the earth while some other are looking for those somewhere in another planet.

This is a translation of what I recieved via internet last week:

##########
People around the globe were asked to give their opinion/solution to food shortage crisis in other countries. No clear answer was recieved just because:

In Africa: Nobody knows what the "food" means.
In Asia: Nobody knows what "A solution" means.
In Eastern Europe: Nobody knows what "Honestly" means.
In Western Eurpoe: Nobody knows what "Shortage" means.
In U.S.: Nobody knows what "Other countries" means.
In China: Nobody knows what "Opinion" means.
##########

And to me, the question is why those institutions and active celebrities are just feeding the people there in Africa. Why not to teach them how to obtain their food through working (farming, whatever)?

  • My roommate is from Cameroon, and he thinks that the greatest help of western countries towards African nations is to leave them alone to learn how to survive on their own. I don't completely agree with him, but I think teaching people to take care of their necessities is more valuable than providing them with food.

  • Hmm, its such a difficult situation. I think almost every answer to that "If you had three wishes" question involves a wish regarding ending the poverty in Africa etc... But when will it happen?

Not while people over here spend up to $100 on a single meal, and take two bites, throwing the rest away. Or $5000 on a designer wallet to hold all our money.

The rich want to be rich, and if no one were poor, they would no longer be rich...

Yes Aydin, your roommate has a valid arguement - they should learn to fend for themselves, but how? When almost every cent the country does make goes back into paying off the debt they are in...

    Tricky situation.
