I will survive

No. This is not about Gloria Gaynor and her songs. This is something I was thinking to (yesterday) after reading a post from Meysam.
The post was about an idea from his professor who asked the students to stay away of today's important tools for a week. So, the students tried to live without electricity and many other things they thought to be important in a modern life. He says that they have had a tough time and only a few of them could resist the situation for a week.

But why is that? What are the differences between the new generations and those lived-say 100 years ago- on the same planet? How they survived and we could not?

The difference, probably, is in the fact that those people have been more productive. Every single person knew something to do. They could do gardening, make their own clothes,... So that they could survive thanks to their own skills. People of the 21st century, however, are a data bank of some info. They store the data but do not know how to use them. We live in a virtual world, you know...

  • As crazy as this may sound...people that lived 100 years ago seem to be more independent than us! I admit: If I was left on a deserted island...I would not be able to survive!

  • I guess we have grown used to all these commodities. Alos the fact that we are so dependent on "time" doesn't help I guess.
I would have to get up an hour earlier if I had to walk to work tomorrow or. . .gee, how would I write my thesis?! what a disaster to write by hand and corrct by hand, no copy and paste, no moving stuff around as easy as a click.
Argh, I would for one have a very tough time ;)
But survival in a deserted island, I think I can still manage: have been 'camping" with barely the minimum necessary a couple of summers around Iran and those are some of my most precious memories full of lessons learned.
